Are the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle related?

Regl döngüsü ile Ay döngüsü ilişkili midir?

Since the beginning of time, the Moon has been a preoccupation of the human mind.

Throughout the ages, human communities around the world have lived with the belief that the Moon has a fascinating power that affects their lives and health. They even saw the Moon as a god and goddess. So could this be real?

In this article, we discuss the Moon and the Lunar cycle, which are claimed to have an impact on human life. We discuss the possible relationship between the lunar cycle and the menstrual cycle from a historical perspective from past to present.

The Moon affects life and natural mechanisms on Earth. On a full moon, corals release eggs and gametes in a reproductive frenzy . Gravitational movements between the Moon and Earth cause tides in the seas and oceans.

Since the Moon influences such life mechanisms on Earth, people have also believed that it can influence various aspects of physical and mental health.

Are the lunar cycle and menstrual cycle related?

Some people believe that there is some kind of synchronicity between the phases of the moon and women's menstrual cycles. You may have heard the word "menstruation", which is one of the most common expressions of menstruation today . You may have come across applications on your computers that allow you to track your menstrual period using the lunar calendar . Maybe you downloaded it to your phones too. In fact, you may have heard from somewhere that there are days when the probability of pregnancy is higher depending on the phases of the Moon .

The idea that the menstrual cycle and the phases of the Moon are somehow linked comes from the concept that a menstrual cycle lasts, on average , 28 days , or about the length of a lunar cycle . The Moon completes its orbit around the Earth in 27 days, 7 hours and 43 minutes, and the Moon phase cycle takes 29.5 days.

It is possible to establish etymological connections between menstruation and the Moon in foreign languages. While "Menses" means "menstruation" in Latin , it is also the plural of the word "mensis", which means "month" in this language, and means "months". This word was probably derived from the Latin word "mene", which means "moon" in Greek and was the nickname of the Moon Goddess Selene.

Various small-scale studies from the 1970s to the 1990s suggested that women's menstrual periods and ovulation phases coincide with the phases of the Moon.

Some of these studies also found correlations between the phases of the Moon, changes in levels of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep-wake cycles, and the phase of the menstrual cycle.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is claimed that menstruation begins with the new moon and the ovulation phase begins with the full moon.

In 2005, a study conducted with a small group in Nepal claimed that women whose ovulation phase coincided with the full moon and who became pregnant during the full moon were more likely to give birth to a male baby. Researchers were of the opinion that those who got pregnant before the full moon were more likely to give birth to a girl.

Barring coincidences, most periods are unlikely to be "synchronized" with particular Moon phases. Menstrual cycles can last anywhere from 21-35 days, and their length can also vary depending on age and hormonal factors. In the light of scientific data…

A comprehensive study published in the Journal of Endocrine Regulations in 2013 tells us that no relationship was found between menstruation, fertility and the phases of the Moon.

A more recent study from the company that programmed the period-tracking app Clue in 2016 also concludes that synchronization between menstrual and lunar cycles is a " myth ."

There is no meaningful relationship in the light of science between the lunar cycle and the menstrual cycle, which has been the subject of many researchers, from scientists to writers, from poets to philosophers, for centuries. People who want to consider and believe in this relationship in a more spiritual dimension are of course free to do so.
