Period Synchronization
Have you ever shared a hot water bottle with your roommate or ordered a large pizza when you were suffering from PMS, thinking that he would eat it anyway? You may have heard of the theory that women who work, live, and play together tend to have their periods at the same time. This theory, known as the McClintock Effect, states that pheromones in women communicate with each other due to physical and emotional closeness, triggering cycle synchronization.
A womb that will rule them all...
Harvard doctor Martha McClintock, who gave her name to the theory, conducted research on a group of 135 women living in university dormitories in 1971. The study found that menstrual synchronization increased among roommates and close friends throughout the school year, but not among women who did not spend time together. McClintock concludes that menstrual synchronization is the result of spending time together, eating together, or sharing a common stressor, and puts forward the "Alpha Uterus" theory. In other words, one uterus has such a great hormonal power that it pulls all the uteruses around it into its orbit and causes the others to menstruate at the same time.
The truth is in intersecting menstrual cycles...
However, many studies have been conducted on this subject since 1971, but almost all of them obtain different results. The counter-argument to McClintock comes from University of Michigan professor Beverly Strassmann in her 1999 article. According to Strassmann, if the average cycle lasts 28 days, the period between two women's periods can be a maximum of 14 days, and on average the interval is 7 days. Considering that the menstrual period can last 5 days, he states that overlapping menstrual cycles are common and, in short, menstrual synchronization is an urban legend. According to a recent study conducted by Oxford University, the results reveal that your cycle is actually more likely to get out of sync with someone else's cycle than to be in sync with it.
Although menstrual synchronization has not been proven, it will continue to create a pleasant feeling of togetherness among people when it occurs. Unity and solidarity is a beautiful thing 😊
